Mets Place J.D. Martinez on Paternity List, Recall DJ Stewart

Former Red Sox Slugger to Welcome New Child

The New York Mets have placed designated hitter J.D. Martinez on the paternity list, the team announced on Monday. To fill his roster spot, the Mets have recalled outfielder DJ Stewart from Triple-A Syracuse.

Martinez, 35, is expected to miss at least three games while he is on the paternity list. He is batting .293 with 10 home runs and 44 RBIs in 78 games this season.

Stewart Returns to Mets

Stewart, 28, was optioned to Triple-A on June 28th after struggling at the plate. In 50 games with the Mets this season, he is batting .205 with two home runs and 11 RBIs.

The Mets are hoping that Stewart can provide some pop to their lineup while Martinez is away. Stewart has hit 30 home runs in each of the past two seasons with the Baltimore Orioles.

The Mets currently lead the National League East by 2.5 games over the Atlanta Braves.
